ESTRELLA/DOS PERROS CLAIMS BONTERA WINES CUP, FINAL SARATOGA POLO MATCH OF THE SEASON

The Saratoga Polo season concluded on a high note on Sunday, with great weather, a large crowd and fine completion as Estrella/Dos Perros got revenge on Shamrock for Friday’s loss to take the Bonterra Wines Cup 8-6.

Ricky Bostwick led the champions with 7 goals, scoring at least once in five out of six chukkers.  Ed Armstong also had a score for the victors.

Shamrock had a bit of a slow start early on, but Max Segunda put three balls between the posts in chukkers two and three to keep John Walsh’s team in green close.  Segunda came alive in again in the sixth and final chukker with the final 2 of his team leading 5 points.  Gene Gass also got in on the rally with a particularly thrilling score less than 30 seconds left in regulation, but Shamrock just ran out of time to mount a full comeback.

The Bonterra Wines Cup concludes the Saratoga Polo season.  The 2008 season will begin next June.  For more information about Saratoga Polo, call (518) 584-8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

“YANKEES” CLAIM TIMES UNION CUP

Tamie Ehinger brought her “Yankees” squad to life to end their scoring drought and energized them to narrowly edge the “Red Socks” 8-7 to capture The Times Union Cup at Saratoga Polo on Thursday.

While the Red Socks were up early on goals from Jackie Czub and Matias Sosa, the Yankees could not put it together offensively at the start, being held scoreless over the first two chukkers and most of the third.  Towards the close of the first half, Ehinger took advantage of a ball near her opponent’s goal mouth, got in front of the play and chipped the ball in between the posts to finally put the Yanks on the board and from there they never looked back.

The Yankees came out in the second half raring to go, matching the Red Socks goal for goal in the fourth chukker.  In the fifth, the Yankees finally caught up on goals from Ehinger and Will Orthwein to knot the match up at 6 by the end of chukker.

In the sixth, Sosa had the last of his team-high 5 markers to keep the Red Socks in contention, but Will Ortwein notched the last 2 of his team-high 5 markers to give the Yankees the Cup with the thinnest of margins.

The next match at Saratoga Polo is The Red Bull Cup on Friday, August 31st at 5:30pm and will feature John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted and his Shamrock Team.  The final match of the Saratoga Polo season is scheduled for Sunday, September 2nd at 5:30pm.  For more information about Saratoga Polo, call (518) 584-8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

BLOOMFIELD TAKES WROW AM 590 CUP

Bloomfield’s steady stream of offense was able to overcome a late rally by Saratoga to take The WROW AM 590 Cup at Saratoga Polo on Wednesday with a final score of 9-7.

Bloomfield’s Will Orthwein led all scorers with 5 markers on the day.  He had a goal in each of the first three chukkers and 2 in the fourth.  Where Orthwein left off, teammate Omar Sosa picked up with a score in chukkers four, five and six.  Tab Orthwein also notched a tally for the victors in the fifth.

Saratoga came on strong late in the sixth chukker, when Ricky Bostwick put away 2 of his team-high 4 and Jube Baez scored the second of his 2.  George Hearst also had a goal for the runners-up.

The next match at Saratoga Polo is The Times Union Cup, scheduled for Thursday, August 30th at 5:30pm.  The final two matches of The Saratoga Polo season are on Friday, August 31st and Sunday, September 2nd and feature John Walsh’s Shamrock Team.  For more information about Saratoga Polo, call (518) 584-8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

ESTRELLA TAKES WILD HORSE WINERY CUP

Estrella came back from an early deficit and fended off a late rally to claim The Wild Horse Winery Cup at Saratoga Polo on Sunday, narrowly edging Golden Zebra 9-8.

Already up a goal on handicap, Golden Zebra hit the ground running in the first chukker.  Isabella Wolf started the scoring off proper with the first goal of the match and then Juan Sanchez put in the first of his team-high 5 to give Golden Zebra a comfortable, early lead.

While Golden Zebra piled it on again in the second with another pair of goals, Estrella bided their time until the third, when they went on a 3-0 run that (when combined with early scores from Gaston Lisioli and Ricky Bostwick) had the game tied at half time.

While Estrella was gaining momentum, Golden Zebra started to slow every so slighty. Golden Zebra only managed a single goal over the fourth and fifth chukkers, but Lisioli continued to roll for Estrella, scoring at least once in each of the last four chukkers.  This minor power reversal made all the difference in such a close match, with Estrella finally taking the lead in the final two chukkers.

Golden Zebra started to rally with two minutes left in regulation and almost came all he way back.  After a couple of missed opportunities, Jay Fetner put Golden Zebra back in the thick of it on a stirring goal, following through on a play where two of his teammates had been hooked or ridden off.  Lisioli responded, however, with the last of his game-leading 6 goals to put the game all but out of reach.  Sanchez managed to score once more to bring Golden Zebra within 1, but they didn’t have enough time to knot it up after that.

The Saratoga Saddlery Best Playing Pony Award was awarded to Adriana, Lisioli’s mount in his 2-goal third chukker.  The award was presented by jockey Jose Santos, a longtime Saratoga fixture and recent inductee into the National Racing Hall of Fame.

The next match at Saratoga Polo is the WROW Cup, scheduled for Wednesday, August 29th at 5:30pm.  For more information, call (518) 584-8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

GOLDEN ZEBRA TAKES BROWN FAMILY CUP

Golden Zebra came out on top at Saratoga Polo on Friday, narrowly edging out Sugar Maple 9-8 to take the Brown Family Cup.

Sugar Maple started the match up 2 goals on handicap, but Jay Fetner brought Golden Zebra to life straight off the bat scoring first in the first chukker.  From there, the lead changed hands several times in a see saw battle that went right up to the final horn.

Sugar Maple relied on hot streaks to keep them in contention, with Peter Lusardi and Omar Sosa teaming up for a pair of 3 point runs, one in the second chukker and another over the fourth and fifth.

Conversely, Golden Zebra relied on a steady stream of goals spread over the whole match.  Gonzalo Fucci scored once in each of the last four chukkers and Juan Sanchez spread his 4 over 3 chukkers, the last of which was the final goal of the match to give his squad the win.

Dr. R. Merritt Brown and his family were on hand to present the awards to both teams for The Brown Family Cup.

GOLDEN ZEBRA TAKES SARATOGIAN CUP

Golden Zebra hopped out early and stayed there to capture The Saratogian Cup at Saratoga Polo on Wednesday.  The team from Virginia triumphed over local mainstays Sugar Maple with a final score of 12-7.

While Sugar Maple actually started the match out a goal up on handicap, Golden Zebra caught up almost immediately.  The 1-2 punch of Isabella Wolf and Team Captain Jay Fetner netted Golden Zebra 3 scores in the first chukker alone to put them up.

Will Orthwein and Gonzalo Fucci kept Golden Zebra in the lead with steady, timely scoring.  Ortwein put a ball between the posts in chukkers two through four and Fucci had a point in the final four chukkers.  Wolf put the icing on the cake with back-to-back scores in the sixth and final chukker of play.

While the husband and wife team of David and Lael Peters were out front all match moving the ball for their Sugar Maple squad, the runners-up relied on the midfield for all of their offensive production.  Juan Sanchez led the team with 4 goals from the Number 3 position.  Sugar Maple’s Number 2, Peter Lusardi, added a pair of goals.

The next match at Saratoga Polo is The Veuve Clicquot Cup, scheduled for Thursday, August 23rd at 5:30pm.  For imformation about Saratoga Polo, call (518) 584-8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

LONGFIELD TAKES UBS, BARRANTES CUPS

Longfield got two Cups for one win at Saratoga Polo on Sunday, claiming the UBS Cup, which was also the final match in The USPA Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup Tournament.  They defeated SaraBoca 10-5.

While the win was a product of true team effort, the 1-2 punch of Stevie Orthwein and Carlos Arellano provided Longfield with all 10 of their goals.  Raziel, Orthwein’s mount in the second and fifth chukkers, was awarded the Saratoga Saddlery Best Playing Pony Award.

SaraBoca’s Lance Vetter, still smarting from a 10-5 loss against Longfield just two days prior in the final game of round robin before the Barrantes finals, cleverly employed strategy to make it a closer contest, substituting Raul Colombres for Peter Lusard in his lineup and switching positions of a few players.  These changes helped make his squad more competitive, just narrowly missing the opportunity for an overtime final.

LONGFIELD TAKES DAVID N. DEUTSCH CUP

Longfield got out in front with a 5-1 scoring drive in the middle two chukkers to claim The David N. Deutsch & Co. Cup at Saratoga Polo on Friday, besting SaraBoca with a final score of 10-5.

Stevie Ortwein provided almost all the offense Longfield needed with 5 goals spread out over four chukkers.  Carlos Arellano, who moved the ball well all match, added 4 for the victors.   Duke Buchan III also sent a ball through the posts with a decisive score, Longfield’s only goal of the fifth chukker, to all but seal SaraBoca’s fate.

SaraBoca’s Lance Vetter tried to rally his team late, leading by example with fast, clean, physical play and a goal in the sixth chukker, but there was not enough time on the clock to mount a full comeback.  Gaston Lisioli added 3 scores for the runners-up.

Longfield’s victory in the David N. Deutsch & Co. Cup counts toward their win total in The USPA Hector and Susan Barrantes Cup Tournament.  The Barrantes continues with a double header at Saratoga Polo on Sunday with the consolation match at 10:30am and the finals at 5:30pm.  The finals look to be a rematch of today’s cup.  For more information about Saratoga Polo, call (518) 584-8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

GOLDEN ZEBRA TAKE DEL CARROL CUP

Golden Zebra came back from an early deficit to claim The Del Carroll Memorial Cup at Saratoga Polo on Thursday, besting Dos Perros with a final score of 11-7.

Dos Perros jumped in front early with a pair of scores from Juan Sanchez and Gene Gass in the first chukker, while Golden Zebra was held scoreless.  Tab Orthwein put one between the goal posts in the second and Gass had another pair to close out the third to preserve Dos Perros’ margin heading into the half.

Golden Zebra came alive starting out the second half, with Ashley VanMetre,  Isabella Wolf and Gonzalo Fucci all scoring to put them out in front and keep them there.  Bloomfield, meanwhile, was held scoreless in the fourth and fifth chukkers.  Sanchez did start to rally with a pair of goals in the sixth and final chukker, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide back in Bloomfield’s favor.

SARABOCA TAKES ANOTHER BARRANTES WIN

The match was tight earlier on, but SaraBoca relied on some stirring play in the second half to roll to a second straight victory in the USPA Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup Tournament at Saratoga Polo on Wednesday with a final score of 15-11 over Bloomfield/Ramirez Financial.

Bloomfield jumped out to an early lead with a pair of goals from Omar Sosa, but SaraBoca responded in kind with a run of their own.  Lance Vetter capped off his squad’s scoring run with a brilliant goal at the end of the first to give SaraBoca the lead at the end of the first chukker.

SaraBoca took Vetter’s momentum into the second to extend their lead by 2, but Sosa responded in kind with 3 unanswered to knot it up by the end of the chukker.  This tight back and forth scoring continued into the second half, but by the end of the fourth chukker SaraBoca started to pull away.  Minimizing Bloomfield/Ramirez Financial’s opportunities and capitalizing on their own, SaraBoca built up a 6-goal margin by the final two minutes of the match.  Luis Galvan tried to close the margin with a late scoring run, but SaraBoca’s lead proved to be insurmountable by the time he got the boll rolling in Bloomfield/Ramirez Financial’s direction.

GOLDEN ZEBRA TAKES SABRINA CUP IN OT

Tackeria almost snatched victory from them, but Golden Zebra got the first goal in sudden death overtime to take The Sabrina Cup at Saratoga Polo on Thursday.  The final score was 8-7.

Scoring was stingy throughout the match, with each team averaging just over 1 goal per chukker.  While Tackeria started the game a point in front on handicaps, they were held scoreless in the first chukker while Golden Zebra went up 2-1 thanks to the 1-2 punch of Ashley VanMetre and Jackie Czub.

From there it was all back and forth as each team almost always scored one goal per chukker.  In the final 30 seconds of regulation, Tackeria’s Matt Coppola converted on a penalty shot to send the game into overtime.

Gonzalo Fucci was the big hero of the day, as he scored the last of his game-high 4 goals off the first throw-in of sudden death to give Golden Zebra the win.

ESTRELLA TAKES YLVISAKER CUP FINAL

For the second tournament match in a row, Estrella needed to get their win in sudden death overtime. On Wednesday at Saratoga Polo, they did it in the finals to claim the Ylvisaker Cup with a final score of 13-12 over Longfield.

Both teams ended up having a similar style of play, with a constant flow of scoring in the first half followed by fits and starts in the second.

Coming out of the half, the game was tied 7-7.  In the fourth chukker, Raul Colombre exploded for 3 unanswered scores to put Estrella up 10-7.  He would finish with a match-leading 7 points.

In the next chukker, it was Longfield who held their opponents scoreless while taking a commanding lead.  However, Estrella caught up by the sixth and final chukker of regulation to send the match into overtime.

When the match went into overtime, it was Ricky Bostwick who became the big hero.  Playing primarily defense all evening at the Number 4 position, Bostwick tallied his only score of the night when it mattered most: with 4:38 remaining in chukker seven to give Estrella the win.

Longfield’s Stevie Orthwein was awarded The Saratoga Saddlery Best Playing Pony for one of his mounts who helped Orthwein to a team-leading 6 goals.

LONGFIELD, ESTRELLA, TAKE YLVISAKER WINS.

The Ylvisaker Cup got off to a bang with two exciting matches at Saratoga Polo.

In the early match, Carlos Arellano started off the match with 4 goals in the first chukker to put Longfield out in front of Golden Zebra and then scored another 5 to keep them out in front with a final score of 14-10.  Juan Olivera supported with 3 scores and Stevie Orthwein added another two.

Golden Zebra got off to a slow start, but came alive in the second half.  Isabella Wolf and Julian Daniels each put away 3 goals in the second half and Juan Sanchez had another 2, but they didn’t have quite enough gas in the tank to close the margin.

In the evening match, Estrella edged Bloomfield/Ramirez Financial 9-8 in a sudden death thriller.  In the closing seconds of regulation, Bloomfield/Ramirez Financial’s Omar Sosa appeared to many to shoot and score to tie the game and send it into overtime, but it was initially ruled wide by the flag man behind the goal.  While neither the two Umpires nor the referee had a good look at the shot, Estrella’s Queco Dupont, in a remarkable display of sportsmanship, conferred with the officials and said his opponent’s goal went in.  The goal was then allowed to set up for a sudden death seventh chukker.  It was fitting, then, that Dupont scored the game winner less than a minute into overtime.  One of Dupont’s horses was also awarded The Saratoga Saddlery Best Playing Pony Award.

The Yvisaker Cup concludes as quickly as it started, with a doubleheader at Saratoga Polo on Wednesday, August 8th.  Golden Zebra will take on Bloomfield/Ramirez Financial in the consolation match at 3pm while Longfield will take on Estrella at 5:30pm for the championship.  For more information about Saratoga Polo, call (518) 584-8108 or visit saratogapolo.com.

BUCKLEIGH TAKES THIRD IN PREZ CUP

The match at Saratoga Polo on Thursday may have been the consolation game of the Regional USPA President’s Cup Tournament, but both teams were playing like it was the final.  Buckleigh Farm fended off a late rally from Bloomfield in the final chukker of the contest to claim third place in the President’s Cup, 11-10.

Offensively, Buckleigh Farm relied on a steady attack.  Leading scorer Luis Galvan scored each of his 5 tallies in different chukker.  He was supported by Osiris Jacques with 4 and Jube Baez, who had 2 in a row before halftime.

Conversely, Bloomfield’s scoring came in bursts.  Will Orthwein had 2 unanswered in the first and Omar Sosa had 3 unanswered in the second.  After a very quiet pair of middle chukkers, Sosa and Orthwein had a marker apiece in the fifth and sixth chukkers.

The finals of The USPA President’s Cup Tournament are scheduled at Saratoga Polo for Friday, August 3rd at 5:30pm as Tackeria faces off against Estrella.  For more information about Saratoga Polo, call 518-584-8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

Estrella and Dos Perros ended the day in a gentlemen’s tie, taking home equal shares of The Saratoga Water Cup in a 7-7 tie at Saratoga Polo on Wednesday.

Rick Baum scored first in the match for Dos Perros, but it was their only score for the first half.  While Estrella was held scoreless in the first chukker, they received offensive production from Jackie Czub, Queco Dupont and George Hearst to take a 4-1 lead at the half.

With the crowd deciding to back them after the half, Dos Perros started gaining ground at the start of the fourth chukker.  They went on a 4-1 run by spreading the ball around.  Baum, Ricky Bostwick and Tab Orthwein all put the ball between the goal posts to chip away at Estrella’s lead.  Getting a lone score in the fourth and another in fifth, Estrella was able to nurse a one goal led heading into the sixth.

Making their comeback complete, Bostwick tied the game in the sixth and final chukker to bring Dos Perros all he way back.  When Czub in turn converted on a penalty shot towards the end of the sixth, it looked like Estrella might hold onto their lead by the thinnest of margins.  Orthwein had other ideas, as she put in the last of her 3 goals in the final minute to tie the game at 7.

The next match at Saratoga Polo is Thursday, August 2nd at 5:30pm as Saratoga Polo ads Thursdays to its regular schedule in August.  For more information about Saratoga Polo, call 518.584.8108 or visit SARATOGAPOLO.COM.

In the early match, Tackeria coasted on a large early lead to take their second straight.  Once again Todd Offen led his team offensively with 6 goals, but Marcelo Castro (who largely plays a defensive role at the Number 4 position) came alive with 5.  Rob Stenzel also had 3 for victors of the early match.

The late match was the second close one for Estrella in a row, with Buckleigh Farm matching them every step of the way. Every chukker save the first and last ended in a tie and the final goal (Ricky Bostwick’s 4th) came in the last minute of regulation.  Botwick led Estrella with 4 on the day.  He got offensive support from Queco Dupont with 3 and George Hearst with 2.

Jube Baez led Buckleigh Farm with 4 markers.  Luis Galvan had 3 and Peter Bibeau had 1 for the runners up of the late match.

It was a double header at Saratoga Polo on Friday as the Regional United States Polo Association Presidents Cup Tournament continued, with Tackeria routing Buckleigh Farm in the early match 12-4 and Estrella edging out Bloomfield in overtime with a score of 14-13 to take the Capital News 9 Cup.

TACKERIA TAKES SANTI PINOT GRIGIO CUP

Already starting the match up by 1 point on handicap.  Estrella wasted no time as Tab Orthwein and George Hearst combined for the first two goals scored of the day to give Estrella a 3-0 lead.  While Tackeria scored at least once in every chukker, Estrella held onto to their lead until the final seconds of the first half when Matt Coppola tied it up at 5.

Coming out of the half, Todd Offen went to work right away with 3 unanswered goals in the fourth chukker to put Tackeria on top for the first time in the match, and that’s where they would stay.  Offen went on to lead all scorers with 8 goals.   12-year-old phenom Coppola was a close second with 5, 2 he scored in the third chukker to finally tie the game and three insurance scores in the final two chukkers of play.  Gene Gass also had a tally for the victors.

BLOOMFIELD SURVIVES LATE SCARE IN SPA CUP MATCH

Coming off of a win in the first match of The Spa Cup at Saratoga Polo, Tackeria could not exploit that momentum as Bloomfield took an early big lead to the end of the Spa Cup match at Saratoga Polo on Sunday.  While Bloomfield ended up on top, their lead was whittled down to a single goal at the end of regulation, the score 11-10.

Bloomfield started off strong, with the husband and wife team of Will and Tab Orthwein combining for the first 3 scores of the game.

Besides a goal on penalty by Matt Coppola, Tackeria was held scoreless over the first two chukkers.  Meanwhile, in addition to the Orthweins’ tallies, Omar Sosa came alive in the second chukker, positively dominating play and putting up 3 balls between the goal posts for points.

While Bloomfield led by as many as 5 during play, Tackeria clawed their way back starting in the third and fourth chukkers with Todd Offen and Marcello Catsro scoring 2 apiece and Coppola and Dave Peters scoring 1 apiece.

While the margin was down to 2 by the end of the fourth, Bloomfield responded with tighter defense in the fifth and penultimate chukker.  In the fifth, no one on Tackeria could put the ball between the posts for the full seven minutes.  In contrast, Omar Sosa the last 2 of his game-high 6 points on the day.

It was Tackeria’s turn to respond in the sixth and final chukker.  Holding Bloomfield scoreless for the final seven minutes of regulation, Offen converted on a penalty while Coppola had back to back goals in the closing minutes, the second coming off of a thrilling steal near the goal mouth.

In the final 30 seconds, Tackeria put a stop to a Bloomfield drive in front of goal and turn the ball around, but Sosa was able to stop Offen at midfield long enough to clear the ball out of scoring range in the closing seconds to insure the win.

The Saratoga Saddlery Best Playing Pony Award was presented to Esperanza, Sosa’s mount in the second chukker.

COPPOLA, OFFEN SHINE IN SPA CUP OPENER

While scoring 5 goals in a single polo match, as Todd Offen did at Saratoga Polo on Friday, is an impressive feat.  To do so when you are all of 12 years old, as Matt Coppola did at Saratoga Polo on Friday, is even more impressive.  Offen and Coppola’s combined offense carried Tackeria over Pony Up in the first match of the Spa Cup with a final score of 13-6.

The game was very tight up until the fourth chukker, when Tackeria got a goal from each of its players while holding Pony Up scoreless.  Coppola put the game out of reach by scoring impressive back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the sixth chukker.

Pony Up was led offensively by JJ Humbert with 3 goals and Andy Lott with 1.

ESTRELLA WINS CHAMBER CUP, 10-9

Matias Sosa came to Saratoga Polo to watch the finals match of The Saratoga Country Chamber of Commerce Cup Tournament as a spectator, but was asked to play most of the second half in the place of Estrella’s Cardo Armstrong.  This proved to be a wise choice as Sosa put in the game-winning goal with just seconds left in regulation to give Estrella the Chamber Cup over Buckleigh Farms with a final score of 10-9.

In a game characterized alternately by scoring bursts and fierce defensive stands, Estrella managed to stay in front for most of the match on the power of Queco Dupont’s 7 goals spread over the first five chukkers.  In addition to Dupont and Sosa, George Hearst and Ricky Bostwick also put points up on the board for the tourney champs.

Buckleigh had the lead several times and was never too far off the mark.  Coming off a 3 point deficit after four chukkers, they were able to claw their way to a 9-9 tie in the sixth by making some key stops near goal when Estrella was on the attack while taking advantage of their opportunities and penalty shots.  However, it would not be enough as Matias Sosa made a shot on goal with mere seconds left on the clock in the sixth to give the win to Estrella

While Pedro Lara and Jube Baez each scored a goal, Buckleigh Farm got the majority of their offensive production from Luis Galvan and his 6 scores.  Peter Bibeau played stingy defense all match at the Number Four position for the tournament runners-up.

The Saratoga Saddlery Best Playing Pony Award was awarded to Jackie, Dupont’s mount in the second and last chukkers.

BUCKLEIGH FARM SCORES CHAMBER CUP WIN

While both Buckleigh Farm and Bloomfield relied on a similar strategy on Friday, feeding the ball to their midfield pair to score, it was a plan that worked out better for Buckleigh Farm as they edged Bloomfield in a Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce Cup Tournament match at Saratoga with a final of 10-8.

At positions 2 and 3 respectively, Will Orthwein and Omar Sosa provided all of Bloomfield’s scoring with 4 goals apiece.  Their counterparts on Buckleigh, Jube Baez and Luis Galvan, also handled their entire team’s offensive output.  Baez had 4 and Galvan notched 6, including a pair of scores on penalties in the sixth and final chukker to seal the game for Buckleigh Farm.
